Construction to widen and complete the country’ largest highway Lang-Hoa Lac started on Sunday in northern Ha Tay province by the Ministry of Transport and Vietnam Construction Import and Export Corporation (Vinaconex).

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Khoan urged authorities of Ha Tay province and Hanoi to create favourable conditions and provide active support for land clearing to help fulfil the project as scheduled.

In the past five years of operation, (phase I) the Lang-Hoa Lac Highway has been brought into full use. The project to widen and complete the highway (phase II) is one of the national key projects.

The 30-km highway will link the capitals belt highway Number 3 in Cau Giay district to Hoa Lac in Hanois neighbouring province of Ha Tay. The six-lane highway will be 140m wide and have 16 large-sized bridges, 7 medium-sized bridges, 35 over-bridges, and two tunnels. There will also be the elevated railway and electricity lines for new urban areas stretching along both sides of the highway.

Construction is scheduled to be completed in 30 months at a cost of US$336 million.

Phi Thai Binh, president of the Vinaconex Board of Management said apart from the Lang-Hoa Lac Highway, Vinaconex is implementing a project to supply safe water to the urban areas of Son Tay, Hoa Lac, Xuan Mai, Mieu Mon, Hanoi, and Ha Dong.

After completion, the Lang-Hoa Lac Highway will link the centre of the capital with a string of western urban areas and sections of Hanoi’s belt highways Number 2, 3 and 4, Ho Chi Minh Highway (National Highway 21A) and other neighbouring provinces and cities.
