Viettel urged to become regional leading telecommunications group
PM Nguyen Tan Dung has urged Viettel, the army-run telecommunications group, to become a leading group in the country and the region.
PM Dung made the request during a meeting with Viettel’s leaders in Ha Noi on March 11.
He praised the group’s achievements and expressed his hope that Viettel would boost production and trade and fulfill assigned political tasks while enhancing scientific and technical studies and applications in production and trade.
PM Dung asked the group to focus on its major fields of telecommunications, IT, and production of telecommunication and hi-tech equipment.
He also urged Viettel to be a self-financing group to attract high-quality human resource, accelerate productivity and quality of products and services, enhance brand-name construction and improve competitiveness in regional and international market.
PM Dung expressed his hope that beside fulfilling tasks entrusted by the army, the group would make contributions to ensuring network and information security and developing Internet services, particularly search tools.
At the meeting, the Government chief and leaders of several ministries and central agencies heard and gave ideas on Viettel’s suggestions related to training, researching, expanding investment and improving production and trade effectiveness of the group.
In 2014, Viettel earned VND197 trillion (US$9.38 billion), a 20 percent annual increase. Its pre-tax profit was VND42 trillion (US$2 billion), an annual rise of 15 percent and representing 23 percent of the profit made by firms owned by the State.
The group paid VND15 trillion (US$714.28 million) of tax, a 10 percent annual increase, making itself be the largest tax contributor in Viet Nam, as well as in Laos and Cambodia.
The group is now employing roughly 90,000 people, including 75,000 in Vietnam and 15,000 abroad.
It has thus far invested in nine countries, namely Laos, Cambodia, Timor-Leste, Haiti, Peru, Mozambique, Cameroon, Tanzania, and Burundi.
In 2015, Viettel will strive to achieve a 20 percent growth with VND230 trillion (US$10.8 billion) revenue and 15 percent rises in turnover and productivity. It also sets a target of maintaining a 15-20% annual growth until 2020.
