13:00 - 17/08/2009

A ground-breaking ceremony for construction of the FPT University and a lab for testing ship models took place in the presence of Deputy Prime Minister Truong Vinh Trong on August 13.

The facilities are being built at the Hoa Lac Hi-Tech Zone outside Hanoi. The FPT project, with an investment of almost 2.7 trillion VND (roughly 168.5 million USD) from the Corporation for Financing and Promoting Technology, was designed by the Nihon Sekkei Company of Japan.

Once completed in 2015, the 30 ha large university will meet the demand for information technology studies by some 10,000 students and provide jobs for a 1,000 strong staff.

The university is expected to become operational by October 2010 with a capacity to train some 1,000 students in the initial stage.

The FPT University sparks hope Vietnam will meet the increasing demand for high-quality human resources for the Hoa Lac Hi-Tech Industrial Zone.

The second project is to transform a lab and tank for testing ship models by the Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Group (VINASHIN) into a national centre for research of hydrodynamics. It will be the largest of its kind in the region.

The centre is expected to conduct international research projects in order to help the national shipbuilding industry become a member of the International Towing Tank Conference.

The future centre will also be a venue for training scientific and technical workers and managers for the shipbuilding industry, with the participation of international experts.

The project investment of almost 1.5 trillion VND will come from the Institute of Shipping Sciences and Technology and the construction is scheduled to finish in 2013./.
