JICA Assists Vietnam to Build National Technical Railway Regulation and Railway Standard Set

On 31 October 2007 in Hanoi, the Ministry of Transport of Vietnam, Vietnam Railway Administration (VNRA) and JICA signed the Scope of Work and Minutes of Meetings for the Study "Building National Technical Railway Regulation and Railway Standard Set in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam" which is expected to last for 15 months starting from February 2008.

More than its objectives to establish the national technical regulation for railway; to establish the national standard set for urban railways; and to transfer technologies and skills to the personnel involved; the Study will provide technical support for the VNRA during the appraisal and approval process as well. After being approved, these regulations and standards will be applied nationwide for urban railway projects.


Experiencing over 125 years of development, Vietnam Railway, especially urban railway is facing with modernization trend. For the preparation, construction and operation of modern railway lines which are fast, convenient, safe, consistent, and will significantly contribute to the improvement of traffic congestion in large urban cities, improving living conditions for urban residents, as well as enhancing the competitiveness of Vietnam urbans regionally and internationally, such a national railway regulation and standard set as the Study is essential.
